What your cameras will do in Captured Motion

Every brand below works for live view and alerts — that is the whole point of the app, and none of this changes it. What differs is whether Captured Motion can also keep clips on your Mac, and that usually comes down to one setting on the camera. Find your brand and it will tell you which.

Checked against each manufacturer’s own documentation on September 13, 2026. Cameras get firmware updates and manufacturers change their rules, so this page is reviewed rather than written once.

Compatibility overview

Brand How it connects Live view Motion & doorbell alerts Clips saved on your Mac What you need
Frigate NVR Your Frigate server Yes Yes Yes Frigate’s address and a login. Use a viewer account — it is all Captured Motion needs.
UniFi Protect Your controller Yes Yes Yes An API key from Protect (Settings → Control Plane → Integrations) turns each camera’s stream on for you and makes alerts instant. A controller login works too.
Reolink On your network Yes Yes Yes Turn on the RTSP port in Server Settings — some models ship with it off. Reolink doorbells report the button press, and pan-and-tilt models can be moved from the app. Battery cameras stream for five minutes at a time.
TP-Link Tapo On your network Yes Yes Yes Create a Camera Account in the Tapo app. If you have Tapo Care and an SD card fitted, remove the card — Tapo allows only two of the three at once. A Tapo doorbell pops up when it sees someone rather than on the button, because Tapo does not publish the press.
Aqara Camera’s own stream Recommended Yes Yes Yes In the Aqara Home app: Settings → Advanced → RTSP. Copy the address it shows you. Aqara points recording software at this stream itself.
Aqara account only Yes Yes No Fine for watching and alerts. Turn on the stream above if you want clips kept.
eufy Camera’s own stream Recommended Yes Yes Yes In the eufy Security app: Camera Settings → General → Storage → NAS (RTSP). Give the camera a fixed address on your router. Not offered by sleeping battery cameras or most doorbells.
eufy account only Yes Yes No eufy is retiring this sign-in. Use the stream above where your camera offers it.
Apple Home Shared with Apple Home Recommended Yes Yes No Opens in its own window, and everything you built in Home keeps working. Apple does not allow apps to read the picture out of that window.
Paired to Captured Motion Yes Yes Yes The camera leaves the Home app while it is paired here — a HomeKit camera answers to one app at a time.
Ring Official Ring connection Yes Yes No You approve Captured Motion in the Ring app and choose which cameras to share. Your Ring password never reaches us. Clips stay in Ring.
ONVIF cameras On your network Yes Yes Yes Works with any camera that genuinely offers ONVIF and a usable stream — Amcrest, Dahua, Hikvision, Axis and many others. Pan-and-tilt models can be moved from the app.
Any other IP camera Stream address you enter Yes Yes Yes If you can give Captured Motion a stream address, it works. Motion is worked out from the picture.
Arlo Arlo account Yes Yes No Arlo does not offer its cameras’ video to any app but its own, on any model, so there is nothing for Captured Motion to record. Clips stay in the Arlo app.
The popup works on every camera here. Most cameras tell Captured Motion when they see something. The ones that cannot — a plain RTSP camera, Tapo, and many ONVIF models — are watched by the app itself instead, which works out that something moved from the picture. Either way the camera appears on your screen. Doorbells on UniFi, Reolink, Ring, Arlo, eufy and Apple Home also pop up on the button itself; the rest pop up when they see whoever is about to press it. A No in the clips column costs you nothing else. The camera still appears in Captured Motion, still opens a popup the moment something moves, and is still there when you want to look. Its recordings simply stay in the app that made them.

Apple Home: you get to choose

Leave the camera shared with Home and everything you have built there keeps working, with live view here. Or pair it to Captured Motion instead and it records — but it leaves the Home app, because a HomeKit camera answers to one app at a time.

Arlo is the exception

Arlo does not let any app but its own see its cameras’ video, on any model, so there is no setting to find. Live view and alerts work; clips stay in Arlo. We would rather tell you that here than let you find out after you have bought it.

Reading the table

Yes works today. No is not something a setting will change — it is the camera, not a preference.
